Idaho Property Tax Relief for Veterans

Idaho provides property tax exemption for veterans with a 100% permanent and total (P&T) service-connected disability rating from the VA. The exemption applies to the first $1,500 of property tax on the primary residence — a different structure than Tennessee’s market value exemption. In Ada County, where effective rates produce approximately $3,230/year on a $550,000 home after the homestead exemption, the Idaho veteran exemption covers approximately 46% of the annual property tax bill.

The homestead exemption and the veteran exemption are separate programs and can be stacked. Apply for the homestead exemption with your county assessor and the veteran exemption with the same office. Both require documentation of ownership, primary residence occupancy, and (for the veteran exemption) your VA disability certification.

Stacked exemptions — 100% P&T veteran, $550K Ada County home

Property tax without any exemption (~0.76%)~$4,180/yr
After homestead exemption (~$950 savings)~$3,230/yr
After veteran exemption ($1,500 credit)~$1,730/yr
Total annual savings from both exemptions~$2,450/yr vs no exemptions

VA Medical Facilities Near Treasure Valley Communities

The Boise VA Medical Center on Fort Street is the primary VA facility serving the Treasure Valley. It is approximately 20–25 minutes from Meridian communities (Cadence at Bainbridge, Century Farm, Paramount) and 15–20 minutes from Garden City (Willowbrook) and Boise proper (Brooke View). The Boise VA operates a full outpatient clinic network including primary care, mental health, and specialty services. Complex specialty care may require referral to VA facilities in Portland, Salt Lake City, or Seattle depending on the specific condition.

St. Luke’s Health System — ranked top 15 nationally — serves veterans at standard private rates and is not a VA facility. Verify VA Choice/MISSION Act eligibility with your VA patient advocate before assuming St. Luke’s services are covered under VA benefits.

Trilogy Valor in Kuna (Canyon County) is approximately 25–30 minutes from the Boise VA Medical Center — slightly farther than Ada County communities but still accessible for routine appointments.
