Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center

Novant Health acquired New Hanover Regional Medical Center in 2021, bringing NHRMC into one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the Carolinas. NHRMC is a Level II trauma center — capable of handling serious trauma cases and complex surgical procedures — and is the primary referral hospital for southeastern North Carolina. The hospital campus is on 17th Street in Wilmington, approximately 15–25 minutes from most 55+ communities.

Novant Health operates multiple outpatient clinics, cancer centers, and specialty practices throughout the greater Wilmington area. Primary care, cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, and neurology are all available locally. For highly specialized cases — complex cancer, rare conditions, advanced cardiac surgery — UNC Chapel Hill (2.5 hours) and Duke Medical Center (3 hours) are the regional academic referral centers.

How Wilmington Healthcare Compares

Wilmington has a strong regional hospital system — better than many comparably-sized coastal markets. But Wilmington does not have a top-20 nationally ranked academic medical center. For buyers comparing Wilmington to Nashville (Vanderbilt), Jacksonville (Mayo Clinic), or Phoenix (Mayo Clinic Arizona), the healthcare tier is a real and meaningful difference for buyers managing serious or complex medical conditions.

For buyers whose primary healthcare needs are preventive care, routine management of common chronic conditions, and elective procedures, Novant/NHRMC provides excellent, accessible care. The honest guidance: identify the specialty care you expect to need over a 20–30 year retirement and verify that Wilmington’s system can deliver it before you commit.

Establish your care relationships before you moveNew patient wait times at Wilmington specialists — particularly cardiology and orthopedics — can run 4–12 weeks. Transfer your medical records and schedule your first appointments before you close on your Wilmington home, not after. Have your current physicians identify which Novant specialists they would recommend for your specific conditions.
